How to Make Coffee Table Cubes

How to Make Coffee Table Cubes

With a little pressed board and rudimentary carpentry skills, you can build wooden cubes that can be combined into a handsome coffee table to enhance your home decor. You can leave the pressed boards unpainted in their natural wood color, or paint them in a single or variety of shades for an eye-catching addition to your living room furniture. The added advantage of this project, besides its relative low cost, is that the cubes can double as storage facilities in small homes and apartments. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Decide on the dimensions of the wooden cubes you want to build by judging how they will fit into the size of your room and the area in which you want to combine them into a coffee table. A good idea is to sketch your floor plan on paper and consider if you want all the cubes the same size, or if you plan to stack a couple of smaller sizes on top of each other.

    2

Purchase wood that is easy to work with, usually a pressed board for this type of project, and in the amount of the dimensions you select, allowing a little extra. Using a table saw, cut the wood according to the size you have previously determined will fit your room. Make three pieces identical squares in size, such as 15-by-15 inches for example, and one piece a rectangle of 15-by-14 inches. Cut sufficient wood for as many cubes as you plan to build in your coffee table design.

    3

Assemble all your cubes together using glue. Place wood glue along the edges of the bottom piece. Add the three sides at right angles, securing them with an air compressor and 1-inch nail brads. Add the fourth side. Sand the wooden storage cube on the inside and outside, removing all the rough edges. Apply a wood sealer to the inside and outside.

    4

Paint the storage box to match your colour scheme. Stack the cubes together for an instant and inexpensive coffee table.
