Sewing Cabinet Ideas

A sewing cabinet is a great idea for any seamstress to have. The problem is that not everyone has room for large cabinets and not all sewing machines fit into premade cabinets. Sewing machines with free arms are hard to set in a cabinet, since being inside a cabinet eliminates the use of the free arm. Use some of these ideas to help you decide what works best for your sewing machine and the space you have.

Build a Custom Cabinet

Decide what kind of space you need and want for your sewing machine. Build a custom cabinet that not only holds your sewing machine, but also keeps all your notions handy and organized for easier use.

Use Other Furniture

Use an armoire. Many armoires have shelves that pull out making it an ideal place to set your sewing machine. Armoires also have plenty of shelving and cubbyholes for your sewing supplies. Keep the mess hidden by closing the doors at the end of the day.

Drop-leaf tables work well as sewing cabinets. Set the sewing machine in the middle of the table where there is the most support. Put up the sides of the drop leaf. Use one side for your patterns and whatever other supplies you need for your current project. Use the other side to hold the extra fabric on which you are sewing. Use the drawer for storing sewing notions.

Three-sided computer desks are also handy to use as sewing cabinets. Set the desk in a corner where it is out of the way. Place the sewing machine on one side, the notions next to you and in drawers then use the other side of the desk for cutting or ironing. Sit in a chair with wheels and spin around to get to cut, iron or go back to your sewing.

Purchase a Premade Cabinet

Take measurements of your machine. Write down the brand name and the model number. Do a little research at the sewing store or online and see if there is a cabinet that is available to fit your machine.

Restore an Old Cabinet

Find an old sewing machine cabinet that your machine fits into. Strip the old finish off, sand and apply new stain and polyurethane. You may also need to replace hinges or modify the cabinet to make your sewing machine fit, but this item is a great addition to your dcor as well as a functional piece of furniture.
