DIY Sewing Table With a Drop Down

A sewing table is a convenient and organized way to store and use your sewing machine and sewing supplies. It also makes sewing easier and more comfortable. A sewing table with a drop down extension is useful for sewing large items and when you need more room. The drop down side is then tucked away to minimize space when it is not needed. With some carpentry skills or with the help of a professional carpenter, you can make a sewing table with a drop down.

Purchase a rectangular sideboard or sofa table that is approximately 4 to 5 feet long and 2 to 3 feet wide. The table can have small drawers on one end but should not have drawers at both ends. The table should be at desk height so that you can comfortably work at it from a standard height chair.

Turn the table upside down so that its legs are in the air. Remove the two legs that are on the side where the sewing machine needle end would be when you place it on the table. If the table has drawers on one end, use the opposite side. Measure a distance of two feet from the end of the table and mark it with a straight line. This will be the drop down extension on the sewing table.

Unscrew the two leg attachments from the drop down side of the table. Cut the table at the marked line with the circular saw. Re-screw the leg attachments approximately 3 to 4 inches from the new cut end of the table. Turn the table right-side-up so that it standing on its legs. You should now have a smaller table and a separately cut, desk portion.

Sand the edges of the cut pieces on the desk and the drop down extension. Screw two metal hinges onto each end of the underside of the drop down piece. Screw the other side of the hinges onto the desk. The drop down extension should now be attached to the desk and fold downward on the hinges.

Cut an L-shaped piece from the plywood that is approximately 1.5 by 1.5 feet. Attach a metal hinge onto one side of the top corner of the L-shaped piece. Attach the L-shaped piece of wood to the desk by screwing the hinge sideways to the top of one leg with the power drill and screwdriver. Ensure that the top of the plywood piece is flush with the underside of the table and the drop down section. The L-shaped piece should swing out to prop up the drop down when needed and fold back against the leg when the extension is dropped down.
