How to Build a Drop-Down Craft Table

Making room for a craft table in a small space can be a challenge. A drop-down craft table is the ideal solution to this problem. You can fit a drop-down table into the bedroom, living room, kitchen, or even the hallway. Raise it to sew, scrapbook or to use for kids' crafts, then lower it when you're done. Because of its low profile, this drop-down table will only take up about 2 inches of wall space when dropped, and can be sized to fit your space and needs.

How to Build a Drop Down Craft Table

Measure the space available. Allow for walking space around your craft table if you are building in a confined area, as well as for room to pull a chair up to the table. Plan on a table around 16 to 20 inches deep.

Have the local lumber yard or home improvement center cut 3/4 inch plywood to your desired measurements. Cut a 1 inch by 2 inch board to the same length as the desired width of your table.

Sand the plywood and the 1 inch by 2 inch support board smooth. Paint or stain the wood, then seal it with a coat of polyurethane. Allow to dry thoroughly.

Use a stud finder to find and mark the location of the studs in your wall. Screw the 1 inch by 2 inch support board into the studs at the level that will work well with the chair you plan to use, using a level to be sure that this board is level.

Screw the piano hinge to the underside of the top of your craft table and to the top of the wood blocking.

Attach the hinged shelf supports to the wall studs and to the top of your craft table.
