How to Assemble a Drop-Leaf Table

Drop-leaf tables are ideal for those who do not have space for a permanent large dining room table but who may occasionally need to accommodate more guests. A drop-leaf table can be made at home or bought in pieces that require assembly. Some store-bought drop-leaf tables may not come with directions, so assembling the table can cause anxiety and stress. However, assembling a drop leaf table is simple, if all the parts are readily available. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Turn the table upside down, so the legs are sticking straight up in the air. Drill four small dowel holes in the table top, ensuring that the holes are not drilled through the table top. The holes should be in each corner, approximately 1-inch in towards the middle from each corner. Take the table legs and drill one similar hole in each table leg. Drill the hole at the top of the leg, aiming for the center of the top surface. Attach the table legs to the table top using wooden dowels.

    2

Take the two additional table top pieces that are the drop down sides of the drop leaf table. Place them next to the table top. Line each piece up with the sides of the table, where they will be attached. They should be attached on opposite sides of the table.

    3

Find the four metal slide supports. The metal supports hold the additional table top pieces when they are erected horizontally for more table surface space. Separate the metal slide supports. The square tube piece is the sliding piece and the mechanical U-shape is the base piece of the metal supports.

    4

Line up two base supports on each side between the edge of the table top and the table top addition pieces, but perpendicular to the table edge. Place the base pieces, so the opening is covered by the table top. Spread them evenly apart on both sides. Ensure the inside of the metal slide supports can be pulled out and cover much of the additional drop down pieces before installing.

    5

Install the metal base pieces by screwing small screws into the table top through the base piece, securing it. Insert the square sliding piece and pull it in and out to test that it slides fine.

    6

Find the hinges and place them, so one half of each hinge is on the table top and the other on the additional table piece. Place two hinges per side. Spread them evenly apart, but ensure that they do not interfere with the metal supports. Install the hinges on both sides and both ends of the hinges using screws and a screwdriver.

    7

Flip the table right side up. To use, erect the sides of the drop leaf table until they are horizontal. Slide the inside of the metal slide supports approximately half way out of the base piece to support the additional table top space. The drop leaf table has now been assembled.
