How to Make a Tablecloth for a Round End Table

How to Make a Tablecloth for a Round End Table

Measure, mark, cut and stitch your choice of fabric to transform it into a beautiful cover for a small round accent table. Choose a theme for the tablecloth such as the Christmas holidays, an elegant dinner party or a childs birthday celebration. The same technique applies in making any round tablecloth that can be used over and over again.

Instructions

    1

Use the measuring tape to measure the diameter of the top of the end table. Also measure from the top edge of the table to the floor.

    2

Calculate the diameter of the tablecloth to be sewn. Measure the end table diameter and add the measurement of the tabletop edge to the floor two times plus 4 inches for the seam. If your round end table has a top diameter of 18 inches and the measurement from the edge of the table to the floor is 30 inches, the total diameter for the tablecloth you need to sew is 18 inches, plus 30 inches, plus 30 inches, plus 4 inches. This equals a diameter of 82 inches.

    3

Purchase fabric at a fabric store for at least 82 inches long (in this example, 2.27 yards). Since the diameter for your round tablecloth is 82 inches, you will have to purchase 4.6 yards off the same bolt of fabric because the bolt width is less than the 82 inches you will need.

    4

Fold the length of the fabric in half widthwise and cut with scissors to make two equal pieces.

    5

Align the two pieces of fabric lengthwise (2.27 yards using the end table example in Step 1) right side in. Straight stitch a seam along the edge 1/2-inch. Open and iron the seam with a hot iron.

    6

Fold the fabric lengthwise and then widthwise to create four layers of a triangle. Use straight pins to pin the edges to keep from falling out of alignment.

    7

Hold the measuring tape at the top point of the triangle and measure down one side 41 inches, the radius of your round tablecloth (the point from the center of a circle to the edge). Mark it with a straight pin. Measure 41 inches down along the other edge of the triangle and mark it also with a straight pin. Holding the measuring tape at the top point, insert straight pins 41 inches from one side of the triangle to the other 2 inches apart.

    8

Use scissors to cut the fabric along the straight pin markers, removing the pins as you cut.

    9

Sew a 1/2-inch wide seam along the edge of the round tablecloth with the sewing machine in straight stitch, folding in 1/2-inch twice for a neat finish. Iron the seam and the entire tablecloth.
