Should I Paint an Antique Gateleg Table?

Don't Paint

If your gateleg table is truly an antique, changing the finish in any way will diminish its value. If there is a chance that your table is older than 150 years old, don't paint it. Have it appraised instead.

Paint the Thing

Painted furniture adds freshness to an old piece. And it is reversible. Years from now, if you'd like your table back to a stained wood finish, you can strip the paint. Chances are that your table is a reproduction of an antique, with no great value.

Bottom Line

If you suspect that your gateleg table may be the real thing, have it professionally appraised before putting a brush to paint.
