How to Make Organic Wool Mattress Pads

If you want to take advantage of the benefits of organic wool mattress pads, but you don't have the budget to purchase one ready-made, you can make your own. Among their many benefits, wool mattress pads repel allergy-causing dust mites; the mites cannot live in lanolin-rich wool. Wool is highly absorbent, a quality that helps you remain dry and cool during the summer months and warm during the winter months. In addition to these benefits, wool's resilient nature provides excellent lumbar support, as it evenly distributes weight across its surface.

Instructions

    1

Measure the length and width of your mattress to determine your mattress pad's finished size.

    2

Cut the mattress pad cover from organic cotton fabric. You will need to cut a back piece and a front piece equal to your mattress pad's finished size, plus an additional 5 inches in length and width to account for your seam allowance. If you cannot cut a large enough back and front from a single length of fabric, piece smaller sections together, then pin the pieces together and sew them together with a straight stitch using organic thread. Use your sewing machine to expedite this step and leave a 1/2-inch seam. Iron the seam flat before proceeding.

    3

Piece together organic wool batting to create a pad that measures your finished mattress pad's width and length. Use a whip stitch to baste the strips of batting together.

    4

Sandwich the batting between the cotton front and back. Place the back piece wrong side up on an even surface and smooth. Place the batting directly on top of the pad backing and position the pad front on top, right side facing up.

    5

Baste the layers together to prevent them from shifting when you tie the wool batting into place. Sew long running stitches once every few inches and baste from the center out. Stitch diagonal lines from the center to each corner of your mattress pad, then stitch straight lines from the center to the pad edge.

    6

Tie the mattress pad. Use organic wool yarn to anchor the batting in place. Thread your needle and sew the yarn down through the layers and back up. Remove the needle and tie the loose yarn ends in a square knot. Create a tie every 4 inches to ensure your organic wool batting doesn't bunch inside its cover.

    7

Remove the basted stitches when you've tied all the layers together.

    8

Fold under the raw edges of the pad's front and back until their edges extend 1/4 inch beyond the wool batting. Pin the folded edges together and use a straight stitch to sew them shut. Use your sewing machine for this step to expedite the process.
