How to Refelt the Cushions on a Pool Table

Older pool tables can be refurbished by applying new felt. Complete refelting usually includes applying felt to both the table and the cushions. In some cases, possibly due to an accident or other damage, only the cushions have new felt applied. Although there are several steps to the process, it can be accomplished by a do-it-yourselfer with a little skill and the proper tools.

Preparing the Pool Table Cushion

Remove the rail from the pool table. Working on the cushion will be easier if the rail can be turned and worked on from both sides.

Remove the feather strip from the top of the rail. The feather strip is a thin metal strip that holds the top of the felt covering the cushion in place. Start at one end and pry the feather strip loose with a screwdriver. Work carefully to avoid damaging the wood behind the cushion.

Remove the rubber cushion from the rails of the table. This step is optional and only needs to be done if the cushion is damaged.

Remove the pocket protector, a small piece of plastic that protects the end of the cushion at the pocket. If it is carefully removed, it can usually be reused.

Cut the new felt cushions to length and angle. This is only necessary if the cushions were removed earlier. Make the cuts with a sharp utility knife. Use the old cushions for a pattern or make measurements of the table and angles. Glue the cushions to the rail using contact glue.

Cut 6-inch wide strips of felt for the cushions. If the entire table is being recovered, the strips for the cushions are cut from the edge of the larger piece. If only the cushions are being recovered, the strips can be cut from any proper piece of felt.

Attach the felt to the top of the rail using the feather strip. Place the felt with about a quarter of an inch extending past the feather strip on the top. This will be trimmed off later.

Turn the rail over and stretch the felt over the cushion. Staple the felt in place under the cushion. Replace the rails on the table.
