Coffee Table Alternatives

Coffee Table Alternatives

A rectangular wooden coffee table is a staple in many homes, but it isn't the only choice. An alternative coffee table can be a great way to add visual interest to a living room or family room. Plus, many alternative options are just as multifunctional as the traditional versions, providing extra storage or additional seating as necessary. Does this Spark an idea?

Nesting Tables

Nesting tables are visually interesting thanks to their varying sizes combined in a single set. They are often available in sets as small as two tables or as large as four or five tables. Nesting tables can do double duty together as a coffee table or each table can be pulled away and used as needed, when needed. Like many alternatives, they come in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and styles to fit any home.

Bench

Benches are generally not used as a coffee table, but could also do double duty as extra seating when needed. Benches come in a variety of lengths, though shorter lengths may be best for use as a coffee table. A picnic bench may look great in a cottage-style or shabby chic room, while a polished piano bench can make an elegant statement.

Boat

A truly unique idea, a new or old boat can be cut into a section for use as a coffee table. The boat can be attached to legs of the necessary height and combined with a glass top for setting items on. The space inside the boat can be used for storage or it can be left as is.

Ottoman

An ottoman is a popular alternative to a traditional coffee table. It's multifunctional and can also be used for additional seating when needed, so it's great for small spaces. Ottomans come in a plethora of colors, fabrics, sizes and styles. These upholstered pieces make great coffee tables, and a tray can be used to set items on or to protect the ottoman from spills.

Trunk

Trunks store items like blankets, pillows, magazines or books and can also work as a decorative coffee table. Trunks come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. They can range in style, from an antique trunk to a brand new trunk from a local shop, or even a large piece of luggage.

Aquarium

Aquariums have also been used as coffee tables and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate fish of all sizes and shapes. However, these do require regular maintenance to keep the interior of the aquarium clean and the fish alive. Aquarium coffee tables are a great conversational piece and are a great way to incorporate an aquarium into a home that has limited space.

Stumps or Tree Trunks

A large tree stump, either polished or raw, can make a great coffee table for a rustic or eclectic style home. A large chunk of a tree's trunk can also be used. A ready-made stump or tree trunk can be expensive --- though it could cost as little as nothing if any exist on the owner's property.

Books

A book lover may consider stacking some of their books together for use as a coffee table. To protect the books, a custom glass cover can be be added, or a tray can be used. Larger books are ideal for this purpose, though several dozen smaller books could also be used to create a supportive table.

Old Doors

Old doors can be fastened with legs and used as a coffee table. This alternative may require a bit more work than other options. However, it does create a conversational piece. Plus, reusing an old door is eco-friendly and reduces waste in local landfills; making it a great option for those who are craving a new coffee table but wanting to remain eco-friendly at the same time.
