Alternative to Changing Tables

If you're trying to keep the cost of furnishing your baby's nursery down or have limited space, skip the changing table. You can set up a changing station almost anywhere in your house with a few supplies.

Furniture and Changing Pads

A dresser or bureau can serve as a changing table in your baby's nursery, provided that the height works for you. Avoid low surfaces that could strain your back. You can keep baskets filled with wipes and diapers handy or use the top drawer for storing supplies. Attach a changing pad to the surface you'll be using to keep the pad from sliding. You can put double-sided Velcro under the pad and on the surface of the furniture to make the pad stick. Be aware that removing the strips once you no longer need the changing pad could mar the finish.

If you'd rather avoid risking possible damage to brand-new or valuable antique furniture, a changing pad can give you a convenient way to change your baby's diaper. You can use it anywhere in your house instead of being limited to one place. Make sure the pad has straps to keep your baby in place. A waterproof pad will make cleaning up easier and protect surfaces such as carpets, beds and sofas from stains. Keep a small diaper bag filled with supplies nearby. You could also stock a few storage caddies or baskets with supplies. Place these around your house for easy access when changing your baby's diaper.

Play Yards

Play yards with diaper changing stations attached provide a portable alternative to changing tables. You can wheel your play yard into any area of your house or take it with you when you travel. These play yards also offer storage areas for keeping diapers, wipes and other supplies such as diaper rash cream readily available when changing your baby's diaper. Safety straps prevent your baby from falling or rolling off. The changing station can be removed or stowed on the side of the play yard when not in use. Make sure that you're comfortable with the height of the station, since it can't be adjusted. Keep in mind that you won't be able to use this changing station once your baby's weight exceeds the limit given in the play yard's manual. This usually ranges from 15 to 25 lbs. Always put the changing station away before putting your baby in the play yard.
