What Is a Drop-Leaf Table?

A drop-leaf table is a wonderful solution for kitchens or dining rooms in which space is an issue. Open one or both leaves as needed and then drop the leaves when not in use. A drop-leaf table also creates extra space for crafts or becomes a play table for children. Consider a drop-leaf table that is not only functional but also is an attractive piece of furniture with extra serving space. Does this Spark an idea?

Setting Up the Table

A drop-leaf tabletop is divided into three sections. The two outer sections, or leaves, are attached to the middle section with hinges hidden underneath the tabletop. When a leaf is raised to the tabletop height, a leg on a swivel is rotated to support the leaf. The table is made larger when either one or both leaves are raised to increase the area of the tabletop. Small tables may have an arm on a swivel rather than an extra leg to support the raised leaf.

Shape

Shapes vary as much as any tabletop varies in size and shape. The drop-leaf portion of the table determines the shape of the raised table. The shape could be square, oval, rectangular or round; it all depends on the cut of the leaf. Designs fluctuate from ornate to modern, and the material varies from wood, metal and glass.

Size

Some tables have large sides that drop down, and the sides have more area than the permanent middle-top section. When the sides are raised, the size of the table increases greatly. Smaller tables used as end tables for a chair or sofa will have small leaves that drop down. A small drop-leaf table is generally designed for style rather than functionality. Occasionally a table will have four drop leaves.

Function

With the leaves dropped to the side of the table, the table is pushed against a wall and is a space-saving table. The top of the middle section may be decorated with an accessory to complement room decor or covered with linen when used in the dining room. Keep the table tight against the wall and raise one leaf for extra space. Or, remove the table and raise both sides and use as an extra table or for a buffet serving table.
