Other Uses for a Changing Table

Other Uses for a Changing Table

When your little one is finally out of diapers, you may be wondering what to do with the changing table. Instead of selling it in a garage sale, recycle the changing table and give it new life and purpose. With a few minor changes, it can once again become a functional piece of furniture. Changing table styles vary, and some designs may be better suited for certain recycled purposes than others. Does this Spark an idea?

Bathroom Storage

If you have a large bathroom, yet it lacks storage space, turn the changing table into additional bathroom storage. Remove the padded top and paint the changing table to match the bathroom decor. Store folded towels or washcloths on the shelves. Create makeshift drawers by adding decorative baskets to the shelves to store extra soap, toothpaste, shampoo and other bathroom items.

Linen Closet

Extend your linen closet storage by moving the changing table to the laundry room. Keep your extra linens, rags, dishtowels and tablecloths stored tidily on the lower shelves of the changing table. After removing the foam pad, store laundry soap, bleach, softener and other laundry products on the top shelf. Instead of using the top portion of the table for storage, use it as a folding station or makeshift ironing board.

Toy Storage

Leave the changing table in the baby's room yet add colorful plastic storage bins to the shelves to use for storing baby toys, extra children's books and other items. Use the space for storing items that are safe for the youngster to access on his own. Remove the changing pad from the top of the table and use the area to store stuffed animals. If your little one pulls off an object from the top shelf, it will be something soft. For the older child, convert the changing table into a multi-storied dollhouse, with the shelves as floors of the house.

Storage

Look around your home and decide where you need additional storage. It might be the sewing room, craft room, tool storage, study or pantry. Alter the appearance of the changing table so that it blends in with its new environment and does not stick out like a displaced piece of furniture, looking for a new home. Remove pads and guard rails and paint or stain the surface. Add decorative rectangular-shaped storage baskets to the shelves to provide drawer-like storage to keep items neat and out of view. Depending on its style, re-purpose the table as a stereo stand, pantry shelves or garden storage.
