How to Create & Paint a Coffee Table

Create a decorative and eclectic coffee table using an old wood shutter. Old wooden shutters are often just the right size for a coffee table top; you can find them at architectural salvage yards at a fraction of the cost of new lumber. Any type of shutter will work -- slatted, wood paneled or vinyl. With a fresh coat of paint and a few alterations, you can create a coffee table that is sure to be a conversation piece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Sand the wood shutter with medium grade sandpaper to smooth rough areas and splintered areas; always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Remove the sanding debris with a damp cloth.

    2

Sand the shutter again with light grade sandpaper to remove scratches left from the harsh medium grade paper.

    3

Sand the four wooden table legs with light grade paper to prepare them for the paint. Wipe away all of the sanding debris with a damp cloth.

    4

Prime the back and the edges of the shutter and all four table legs with latex primer. Apply the finish in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Flip the shutter and prime the front. Let the primer dry completely.

    5

Paint the back and edges of the shutter and all four table legs with your choice of latex paint. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Flip the shutter and paint the front; let the paint dry completely.

    6

Assess the shutter and table legs to determine if another coat of paint is necessary. If the finish looks spotty or thin, repeat Step 5.

    7

Apply a polyurethane topcoat to all of the painted surfaces of the shutter and the table legs. This will protect the finish from scratches. Allow the polyurethane to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    8

Place the shutter face down on a flat surface. Drill pilot holes in the shutter where the screws to attach the table legs will go; some table legs have bracket attachments, others have screws exiting the end of the legs. The pilot holes make it easier to insert the wood screws.

    9

Attach one table leg to each corner of the shutter with screws.
