How to Repair a Dinette Chair

How to Repair a Dinette Chair

Usually the first thing to fall apart on your old dinette chair is the seat pad. But you no longer have to buy a new dining room chair when your seat pad gets ripped; you can repair your old dinette chair on your own by reupholstering it. The tools you need for this easy fix include foam, material and a staple gun. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Turn the dinette chair over and use your screwdriver to unscrew all the screws from the wood frame. Save the screws in a zip-top plastic bag. Turn the chair right-side up and pull off the seat pad. Pull the old material and foam off the wood frame of the seat pad using your scissors to dig under and loosen the staples if necessary.

    2

Place the wooden frame on the new foam and use a marker to draw a template, then cut out the template with your scissors. Turn the wooden frame right-side down and squeeze on lines of glue. Align the foam pad with the wooden frame, then press it down onto the wet glue, and let it dry.

    3

Lay the new material for your chair on the table or the floor. Place the wooden frame onto the material, and use your marker to draw a template around the frame, adding 4 inches all the way around. Use your scissors to cut out the template.

    4

Take a small section of the material and pull it tightly over one side of your wooden frame. Fold down the material, then staple it to the frame using your staple gun, placing the staples 2 inches apart. Continue pulling the material taut, folding it and stapling it until you have upholstered the entire frame. Use your scissors to trim off any extra material.

    5

Turn the dinette chair upside down and place your newly reupholstered seat pad underneath the chair, right-side up. Prop your dinette chair onto another chair or a couch to support it and hold it level. Align the screw holes of the upholstered seat pad with the screw holes of the chair. Take the screws out of the zip-top plastic bag. Use your screwdriver to screw them tightly back into the wood frame of the seat pad, and turn the chair right-side up again.
