How to Build a Bookcase Drop Shelf

How to Build a Bookcase Drop Shelf

A drop shelf is an ideal type of shelf for those who may require a desk or a table but do not have the space for one. A drop shelf can be a shelf or table in times of need but can be folded flat toward a wall or unit when it is not needed. Drop shelves also can be used as a bookcase.

Instructions

    1

Measure the ideal size of the bookcase drop shelf with a measuring tape. The measurements should include the length and width. Use these measurements to draw a rectangle on the plywood.

    2

Cut the rectangle out with the saw. Use the sandpaper to smooth the edges and surface. This will prevent cracks and splinters.

    3

Paint or stain the drop shelf you just cut. Let it dry overnight in a well-ventilated area.

    4

Decide where the bookcase drop shelf will be installed. While it can be installed on a wall directly, it also can be installed as an attachment to a pre-existing furniture unit. If installing it on a wall, use the stud finder to locate the studs in the wall. The drop shelf should be installed to a wall stud for support. Make marks where the bracket will hang.

    5

Install the drop-shelf bracket on the wall or furniture unit using screws and screwdrivers. If necessary, use the drill to create the holes before installation. This is required only in a few instances when the wall is hard or thick.

    6

Place the plywood shelf on top of the bracket and attach it using screws and screwdriver. Make sure it is secured well.

    7

Use the drop shelf a couple of times by closing the bracket so the shelf rests against the wall and erecting it so the shelf is horizontal. Do this a few times to get the hang of the bracket.

    8

Place books on top of the drop shelf when it is in use. Remove the books before lowering the bookcase drop shelf.
