How to Make a Diaper Change Pad

The average parent will change thousands of diapers before the baby is potty trained. It may be a dirty job, but you can make it a bit more fun and comfortable for both you and your baby with a custom diaper change pad that both inexpensive and easy to make.

Instructions

    1

Choose a fun cotton print fabric that expresses your sense of style and personality then select a minky fabric in a coordinating color. The best place to find fabrics with unique prints is the quilting section of your local fabric store.

    2

Pre-wash your cotton print and minky fabrics according to the manufacturers' instructions.

    3

Cut the print fabric, minky fabric and quilt batting to 19-by-29 inch rectangles.

    4

Place the cotton print and minky fabric rectangles together with the right sides facing each other. Place the quilt batting on the wrong side of one of the fabrics. Pin the layers together then set aside.

    5

Cut a 3-by-18 inch rectangle out of the remnants of your cotton print fabric. Fold in half with the right sides facing together, press with a hot iron.

    6

Sew along the the long edge and one short edge using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Clip the corner then turn right-side out. Press with a hot iron then topstitch all the way around the rectangle, stopping at the open end, to create a strap for the diaper change pad.

    7

Pin the strap you just finished sewing between the cotton print and minky fabrics, making sure it is placed at the center of one of the long edges of the diaper change pad. The open end of the strap must line up with the edge of both layers of fabric plus the quilt batting layer.

    8

Stitch the layers together using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving a 5-inch opening. Clip the corners then turn the pad right-side out.

    9

Slipstitch the opening closed then topstitch all the way around the diaper change pad 1/8 or 1/4 inch away from the edge of the fabric.

    10

Sew a small square of hook tape to the end of the strap. Fold the diaper change pad in half length-wise then fold in half length-wise again. Take one end and fold it in 1/3 of the way toward the center. Take the other end and fold it in 1/3 of the way to the center to create a neatly folded/stacked diaper change pad. Wrap the strap around the folded pad then mark where your loop tape will be placed. Sew the loop tape onto the strap.
