How to Make a Changing Table Sheet

Changing table sheets can easily be made at home with fabric chosen at a local fabric store. A couple of yards of fabric can often be less expensive than the cost of a changing table sheet purchased in a store. In addition, because there are many different sizes of changing table mattresses, there may not be sheets that are the right size for a changing table mattress available in a local store. It should only take about an hour to make asheet, and if you make more than one at a time, the average time to make each sheet can be as little as 15 minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Measure the width and length of the top of the changing table mattress.

    2

Measure the thickness of the changing table mattress.

    3

Add twice the measurement of the thickness to the length and width measurements of the mattress top.

    4

Add 8 inches to the width and length of the mattress top.

    5

Cut the fabric to the length and width of the final measurements obtained from adding twice the thickness and 8 inches to the width and length of the changing table mattress.

    6

Lay the changing table mattress on the center of the piece of fabric that was cut to size for the sheet. To determine center, make sure the measurement of the fabric is equal for width and height on each side of the width and each side of the length.

    7

Use a washable fabric marker to mark where the four corners of the changing table mattress are on the fabric. Mark an X in each of the four corners. Remove the changing table mattress from the fabric.

    8

Use a square to draw a line from each corner to the edge (toward the X) of the fabric to mark a square on each corner that will be cut out to create the corners of the changing table sheet.

    9

Make another line 1 inch toward the edge of each corner. The inch is the area that will be sewn.

    10

Cut out the square in each corner that remains.

    11

Pin each corner together with the right side of the fabric facing away from the area pinned together.

    12

Sew the corners together 5/8 inch in from the edge of each of the four pinned corners with a straight stitch.

    13

Fold and iron a strip of the fabric inch from the edge all the way around the sheet facing under the sheet.

    14

Create another fold and iron under a strip that is 1 inch all the way around the sheet.

    15

Sew on the inch that was folded under all the way around, but leave a 1-inch opening to put elastic in the pocket created.

    16

Attach a large safety pin to inch elastic. Push into the hole that was left when sewing in the last step.

    17

Feed the elastic through the entire pocket and out the hole that the elastic was started through.

    18

Sew one edge of the elastic in place.

    19

Lay the sheet on the changing table mattress and pull the elastic until the elastic holds the sheet snug against the changing table mattress.

    20

Pin the edge of the elastic in place. Remove from mattress and sew in place.

    21

Sew the hole the elastic was fed through closed. Wash the sheet and use.
