A baby changing pad is a great project for any sewer, whether you are experienced or a beginner. They are quick to create, make great gifts, and can be personalized to match any nursery decor.
Materials and preparation
Purchase two yards of fabric--one yard of regular baby flannel and a second yard of vinyl-backed flannel. Choose thread that coordinates with both fabrics. Wash and dry both fabrics. Iron if necessary. Lay one fabric right-side up on your work table. Lay the other fabric right-side down on top of it, matching corners and sides. Pin the two fabrics together around the edges.
Assembly
Beginning about 2/3 of the way down one side and 5/8" in from the edge, sew down and around the next side, creating a slightly rounded corner. Repeat all the way around until you have reached the side you started on. Sew about 1/3 of the way down that side, leaving 1/3 of the side unsewn in the middle. Remove pins.
Finishing
Turn the changing pad right-side out using the gap left on the first side. Iron around the whole pad, making sure the edges of the unsewn area are turned in. Sew completely around the pad about 3/8" in from the edge. Trim threads.
