How to Build a Table for Cutting Fabric

Sewing is a wonderful pastime if you have the patience and a good artistic eye. Making your own clothes is a great way to make sure the clothes fit you properly and to save money. One of the hardest things to deal with when sewing is the lack of space for cutting and measuring fabric. You don't have to suffer through this, however. It is easy to build your own cutting table that will make any sewing projects easier overall.

Instructions

    1

Sand down the surface of the 3/4-inch plywood until it is smooth. Because you will be working with fabric on this surface, you want to make sure it is completely smooth.

    2

On the unsanded side of the plywood, build a rectangular frame with the two pieces of 7-foot-long 2 by 4 and two pieces of the 2-foot-9-inch 2 by 4. The frame should go around all the edges and should be screwed into the plywood from the top.

    3

Place the remaining piece of 2-foot-9-inch 2 by 4 in the center of the frame. This piece will add support to the table. Screw this piece in from the top and sides of the table.

    4

Place the four remaining pieces of 2 by 4 in the corners of the frame and screw them on from the top. These are your table legs.

    5

Place your table upright. Unroll the tape measure along one of the 7-foot ends. Staple the tape measure along the edge of the table to fasten it to the table. If it is longer than 7 feet, trim it to match the table length.
