Before your baby is potty-trained, the changing table is a place where you will be spending a lot of time. Decorate it to make it as beautiful and welcoming as it is functional. Little things like a coordinated cushion or an initial wall-hanging can turn a simple area into a stunning room showpiece.
Changing Pad Cover
The changing pad is the thick, mattress-like cushion that sits on top of the changing table to provide some comfort for your baby as he is being changed. A standard changing pad comes in plain white and many baby supply stores sell covers that can go on top. If you can't find the one you want or you want to personalize your own, measure the length, width and height of the changing pad. Create a cover that fits on top of the pad from a comfortable piece of fabric, fitted sheet, soft blanket or even old clothing. Sew elastic around the border to create a fitted cover or add snaps to the bottom of the pad and the edges of the sheet to snap it on.
Personalized Mobile
As your baby gets older, it will be harder to contain her while you change her diaper. Create a hanging mobile to display above the changing table so she will have something to look at while you get the job done. Make the mobile out of wooden or plastic frames turned on their sides and hang pictures from the frame using string. Attach a few long pieces of string to the sides of the frame and hang these from the ceiling.
Decorated Mirror
Babies love to look at their own cute faces. A mirror is a wonderful way to distract baby while you change his diaper and engage him in babbling conversation. Decorate the mirror with your baby's name, pictures of bottles, diapers and carriages or simple shapes using puff paints and hang it near his changing table. Make sure to face him in the right direction when you place him on the changing pad.
Pampered Pillow
Make the changing experience extra comfortable for your baby by sewing a pillow especially for the changing table. While placing a pillow in your baby's crib is not recommended until she is a certain age because of suffocation concerns, using a pillow for a few minutes under your supervision should not be a problem.
Make the pillow by placing together two pieces of fabric of the same size, with the top of the fabric facing in. Sew along three sides to close them and flip the fabric inside out, so it is facing the right way. Stuff the pillow with cotton filling and sew up the open side.
